Jones and I are on a journey — the journey to financial freedom. We have got to change how we think about money. We have got to change how we spend it and we’ve got to change how we save it. We need a new attitude.
Our daughter Jenna told me about a financial plan she and her husband were investigating – Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover. She learned about it from her cousin Shelly. Shelly and her husband were in the process of working the plan and they were doing great. They had paid of two cars and were working on another large debt. That caught my attention. After several phone sessions and much discussion, Jenna suggested we take this journey as a family. She thought all of us could use some help in this area and she was right. Too many times we all had too much month at the end of the money. She said she’d arrange a family conference call once she had figured out enough to be able to explain the plan comfortably.
I did what I always do when I need to know something — I went to the library. I picked up a Revised & Updated copy of Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover. When I started reading, I knew I was on to something. It just made so much sense! I explored the web and checked out a YouTube video by LaneVidsMobil. (Click on the link if you want to watch it. If the link does n’t work, here is the address — http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOiQ-X5eUO4&feature=c4-overview-vl&list=PL85A0EA641B83C996.) This guy and his wife were on the same journey and using the Dave Ramsey Total Money Makeover as their compass. His comments were hilarious and I could visualize times when I had been where he was and family members who are where he is now. We had to do this!
I sent out a text message to my children, my siblings and a few other family members inviting them to join us. Many of them agreed that they, too, needed a rosier financial future. They, too, needed to use money, spend money, and save money differently. We all agreed the family support would be helpful. Jenna will start the talking — she will explain the process and help us identify goals. I will start the writing — I’ll develop a blog to provide inspiration and updates.
After much deliberation I decided to call the blog Darcy’s Dime. It will serve as a tool to connect and support us as we take this journey together. We will share how things are going. The good. The bad The funny.
One of the things that Dave Ramsey talks about in this money makeover is finding money to pay bills. How do you find money? He assures his readers that this can be done but I was a bit dubious. Shortly after I started reading the book, Jones cashed in a bowl of coins. He’d been saving quarters, nickels, and dimes for a while. When the counting was done, he had close to $50. I saw right then and there that every dime counts. It was on We were going to do this and I was going to get as many of my family members as I could to take the journey with us. We will live like no one else so we can all live like no one else.
Every dime counts!
