I organized my bills in order of smallest to largest.
I made all my monthly payments and got things current.
I went online and tried the free trial for the debt snowball, typing all the bills in and was amazed at the quick debt free date.
I’d been working on my attitude and sharing information with my husband. He was working on reshaping his attitude. What went wrong? In a very weak moment, and I mean that literally, I ordered a handbag from QVC — a home shopping network. How did that happen? Well, I was really tired and decided to get some rest. I got in bed, turned on the TV, and what channel was on? QVC. What were they hawking? Dooney and Bourke handbags. Oh, my goodness! I watched avidly not planning to buy. The next thing I knew, I was rummaging through my closet and pulling out handbags. When the hostess unzipped pockets and showed beautiful linings, I did the same with mine. When she showed how the strap fell just so on the shoulder, I put my bag on my shoulder. My cell phone rang to temporarily interrupt the madness.
“What are you doing?” asked a long-time friend. When she learned I was watching QVC she warned me to “be careful.”
“No problem,” I replied. “I don’t order stuff off TV.”
Never. Ever. I never order stuff off TV. Never — until the hostess brought out a crimson, medium leather satchel with accessories. I was riveted to the television like my seven year-old grandson when he’s playing a video game. Then, she uttered the catch phrase — six easy payments. My mouth started to water as I crunched the numbers. $55 a month. I could totally do that. The next thing I knew, my debit card was out and I was on the phone ordering a handbag. When I hung up the phone I was almost slavering. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on that pebbled leather. Then reality struck. What had I done? What was I doing? I wasn’t saving money. I was spending it! It’s going to take a lot of dimes to cover the cost of that bag. Oh, my goodness.
No more home shopping networks for me! Darcy Jones
What’s the lesson here? No more home shopping networks for me. I obviously have no impulse control so I must remove the temptation. No more playing TV hostess. No more looking. If I don’t look, I won’t be tempted. No more unscheduled spending. I have to remember that every dime counts.
