We held our first family conference call on Sunday, August 4 to roll out the Dave Ramsey Total Money Makeover. A few family members were familiar with the program but it was new to most of them. Who knew people could get so excited about saving money! Here’s what we did to initiate our Total Money Makeover. Try it with your family.
A conference call was a great way to connect the family and get them excited about the Dave Ramsey Total Money Makeover. Darcy Jones
Notified family and friends of date and time of conference call.
I sent out the conference call information well in advance of the call. Three weeks in advance I let them know a conference call was being scheduled. Two weeks out, I gave them the date and the time. One week out I reminded them of the date and time and gave them the phone number.
I used email, text messaging, phone calls, and word of mouth to get the message out. Different methods work for different people. You know your family best. Use the method that works for them.
You can get a conference call number for your family from freeconferencecalls.com.
Set an agenda.
I emailed an agenda several days in advance of the call. I wanted people to know I valued their time and that what we were about to do was serious.
A set agenda allowed us to get down to business quickly. We were able to accomplish the tasks on the agenda in the 30 minutes we had scheduled.
Set date for next meeting.
The agenda provided space for note-taking and one of the items on it was Date of the Next Call.
Participation in choosing the date and time for the next meeting or family conference call helped with the buy-in. Instead of me planning and scheduling it was us planning and scheduling. Again, this communicated the seriousness of our task and allowed all to know that this would be an ongoing process. We were in it to win it!
Call to action.
I asked them to join Jones and me in a journey for financial health. Join us and engage in Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover. I suggested we do this as a family so we could be supportive, share ideas, and hold each other accountable. We would be our own support group.
I explained that we are not trying to get rich. It would be nice, but that wasn’t the goal. What we want to do is be financially healthy. We wanted a fully funded emergency fund, enough money to meet our needs and then some. We want to travel, eat out, and live life to the fullest without worrying about who’s on the end of the line when the telephone rings. We weren’t asking for much. All agreed that by making changes and using the right tools, this was possible for all of us.
If you have friends or family members who share similar goals, join the Jones family as we implement Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover. Let me know how your family does and I will keep you updated about what’s happening with ours.
Newlywed Sunshine had this to say as she reflected on the first family call, “I would just like to thank you and the others who assisted in the conference call yesterday for all your hard work. Doing this as a family is an excellent idea, a great way to keep each other motivated…This program may be easier for some than others and some may need more encouragement than others…Most people don’t like change, but it’s time that each one of us make the painful change in order to better our lives…This course will take dedication and a great deal of sacrifice but we all can do this…Now is the time for us to lay out the blue print of our lives financially and get our plans in order…I am so excited to be a part of this experience with you all and even more excited to work together with my new husband on this…I think this is a wonderful way to get our marriage off to a good start…So as Dave Ramsey says, let us all get on our gazelle intensity and run for our lives to get out of debt…Best of luck to everyone…”
Every dimes counts!
