I am struggling to break my Starbucks habit. Every day on my drive in to work, I usually stop at Starbucks. I order a Venti Soy Cinnamon Dolce Latte in the spring and summer, a Venti Soy Pumpkin Spice Latte in the fall, and back to the Cinnamon Dolce Latte in the winter. About twice a week, I added a breakfast sandwich or pastry. This bumped the price up from $5.56 to eight or nine dollars. I was spending about $1500 a year at Starbucks. I have to tell you, it was a real eye opener when I added it all up.
I’m learning to enjoy lattes I make at home. Darcy Jones
Jones and I were working on the checkbook. I usually took care of this but since we started Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover, we often work on it together. As we viewed our bank statement online, entry after entry after entry showed a debit for Starbucks.
“Don’t we have coffee here?” He tapped the screen pointing out several of the entries.
I cringed. “Uh, yeah, but it’s not Starbucks.”
He did a quick calculation. “You’re spending a lot of money at Starbucks. Can’t you drink coffee at home?”
After more discussion and budget minding, I decided to eliminate this money stealer. Now, when I drink coffee, I make it at home. I get some of the International Delight gourmet coffee creamers and doctor it up. I enjoy a Caramel Macchiato or a Heath Bar latte at my kitchen table. I am spending a lot less money and putting more dimes in the piggy bank. I still have that Starbucks craving but I’m fighting it.
So — this morning I called my sister, Micky (MyBookHabit.com), to chat. I heard a little noise in the background and asked what she was doing.
“Hold on,” she replied. “I’m ordering a latte.”
“What! A latte! Are you in Starbucks?”
“Um, no! I didn’t say that.” She chuckled as somebody in the background shouted an order.
“Oh, no you didn’t!” I exclaimed. You are not in Starbucks!”
Well, she was. And whereas she, too, is taking this Total Money Makeover journey with me, Starbucks is not her issue. “I’ll talk to you later,” I said and disconnected the call. Then, I went into the kitchen and made myself a Caramel Macchiato latte.
Every dime counts.
