I’m thinking about retiring. I’m not sure just yet, but I’m thinking about it. Jones retired two years ago and he’s been after me ever since to join him. This has been a particularly nice summer. We’ve spent lots of time together, good times. We’ve taken walks around the neighborhood, trips to Chicago and Tampa, and enjoyed having our children and grandchildren come to visit. At some point each day, we’ll sit on the porch together and just be. Maybe he’s reading the paper and I’m fiddling with my iPad. Maybe I’m drinking a smoothie and he’s enjoying a bowl of cereal. Or maybe we’re bird watching – the sweetest little hummingbirds feed at my container garden. It’s just been nice and I am not ready to go back to work. So — I’m thinking about retirement.
What do you do when you want to retire? What’s the process? To be honest, I don’t have a clue, but I’m going to find out. I’m going to become my retirement expert. Notice, I said my retirement expert. I’m going to learn what’s best for me and then – I’ll share it. I figure you might want to know what to do just in case you, too, are thinking about retirement.
1. Get my estimated social security benefits.
I can do this by going online to http://www.socialsecurity.gov/ and creating an account. Once my account is established, I should download a copy of my estimated benefits.
2. Bring in a recent pay statement.
I need to find out how much I’m paying for insurance. This information will be useful if I decide to retire before I’m eligible for Medicare.
3. Find out how much I have in my company’s retirement plan.
This income will be added to my Social Security benefits.
4. Create a budget based upon the projected retirement income.
I’m to create a realistic budget on what it takes for me and Jones to live the way we want to live.
5. Come back and see him once I’ve got the information.
That’s what I know for now. When I find out more, I will tell you more. In the meantime, I’m Darcy Jones, my retirement expert, and I don’t want to work until I’m 75. How about you?
